Every house built to modern standards has a damp proof course a few brick courses above ground level, stopping moisture in the soil travelling upward into the brickwork by capillary action, much as water climbs a paper towel dipped in a saucer. Raise soil, paving or a border to that height, or above it, and you've given moisture a route around the barrier and into the wall above.
What follows is rarely quick. Damp doesn't usually appear the week the ground goes up; it can take years to show as anything you'd notice inside, which is exactly why so many houses sit like this without anyone realising there's an issue. That lag is also why the problem is so often inherited rather than created: a border built up decades ago, a driveway relaid long before you moved in, nobody currently in the house made the original decision.
High Ground Doesn't Always Mean Damp
Here's the point that matters most, and the one that gets lost in a lot of what you'll read online: ground above the DPC is a risk, not a certainty. It means the wall's protection is compromised, not that damp is guaranteed, or imminent. Whether it actually shows up depends on the wall's construction, the soil, how exposed that side of the house is to driving rain, and how well water drains away from it once it's there.
I've seen walls sit with ground a little high for years with no trouble at all, and others show damp within a couple of seasons. I won't pretend to know which yours will be without looking at it, and anyone confident from a description alone is guessing. The sensible response to compromised protection is to reduce the risk, not to wait and see how the gamble plays out.
Work Out What You're Actually Looking At
Before anything else, be sure what you're looking at, because this gets misread constantly.
- A rendered plinth at the base of the wall can look like raised ground when it's actually part of the original build.
- The DPC itself is often hard to spot: hidden by render or cladding, or simply weathered until it blends into the brick above and below it.
- Some older properties, built before a DPC was standard practice, may not have one at all, which is a different conversation entirely.
If you're not confident which of these applies to your house, that's not a job for guesswork. Get someone who knows how to read a wall to look at it properly before you decide anything.

Your Options, From Least to Most Invasive
Once you know the ground genuinely is high against the DPC, it helps to work through the options in order, starting with the least disruptive.
Lower the Ground
The most direct answer: dig back the soil, border or paving until the finished level sits comfortably below the DPC again. Where there's room to do it and nothing structural in the way, this solves the problem at its source rather than working around it, and it's usually the first option worth costing.
A Drained Margin
Often the best real-world answer, particularly where lowering the whole area isn't practical, is a drained margin at the wall: a French drain, a narrow gravel or shingle strip, or a discreet channel, running along the base of the house. It holds the ground back and gives water somewhere to go other than against the brickwork, without requiring you to re-level an entire border or driveway. In my experience this is frequently the option that solves the problem properly while disturbing the least of the garden around it.
Hold It Back With a Retaining Structure
Where the raised level genuinely needs to stay, a sloping garden, a driveway, a border you don't want to lose, a retaining structure can hold that ground away from the wall, with a proper gap and drainage detail between the two. The raised level stays; it simply stops touching the house. It's more involved than a drained margin, with its own rules around stability and drainage that need designing properly, not guessed at. Remedial Damp Proofing
Where none of the above is possible, the remaining option is remedial damp proofing to the wall itself. I'll say this as plainly as I can: that is a builder's or a damp specialist's job, not a garden designer's. What Not to Do
A few things I'd steer you away from, because I see them tried more often than they should be. Don't simply render or paint over damp appearing on an internal wall; that treats the symptom, not the moisture still finding its way in behind it. Don't assume a modern damp proof membrane or tanking system fixes an external level problem on its own; it can manage symptoms while the ground outside carries on doing what raised ground does. And don't dig deep against a wall's foundation without advice, however tempting the quick fix looks; foundations have their own tolerances, and disturbing the soil around them without knowing what you're doing carries its own risk, separate from the damp question entirely.
When to Act Now, and When It Can Wait
Not every case here is urgent, and it helps to know which you've got. If you already have visible damp inside, spoiling plaster, or a room with a musty smell that never quite clears, get a builder or a damp specialist round now. That's an active problem, not a future one, and it deserves attention ahead of anything else in the garden.
If what you've found is ground that's simply a bit high, with no symptoms inside at all, you have time. That's a case for planning it properly as part of a wider garden design, working out the right option for your site rather than reacting on a Sunday afternoon. Compromised protection is a reason to plan properly, not necessarily a reason to panic.
