Garden Retaining Walls: A Complete Designer's Guide for Kent Gardens

When You Actually Need One
A retaining wall earns its place wherever there's a change of level soil won't hold on its own: a sloping garden cut into usable terraces, a raised bed lifted clear of a damp lawn, a patio levelled against a slope, or a boundary where next door sits noticeably higher or lower than you do. Left alone, a slope like this slumps and erodes over years. A wall, built properly, makes the level change permanent and usable. It's the same principle behind getting a raised patio right against the damp course: get the levels right from the outset.
The Materials, Honestly Compared
There's no single right material. The choice depends on height, load, the style of the house, and how patient you are. Here's how each behaves, not as a shopping list.
- Brick suits older Kent houses, but needs real engineering as height builds up.
- Natural stone is the most characterful and ages best, though it's slow, skilled work.
- Concrete block is the workhorse: strong, consistent, and it disappears once faced or planted.
- Gabions (stone cages) drain themselves and suit a contemporary or rural garden, though they're a bold statement.
- Sleepers (timber) are the quickest, most affordable route to a low terrace, though they have a finite lifespan.
- Poured concrete carries real height and load best of all, but it's the least forgiving and least soft-looking.
- Dry stone is the most traditional and self-draining, since water passes straight through, but suits a lower wall better than a tall one.
Why Retaining Walls Fail
This is the section worth reading twice, because it's the one most merchant sites skip.
By a distance, the biggest cause of failure is water with nowhere to go. Soil holds water like a sponge, and when it can't drain away, it builds up behind the wall as hydrostatic pressure: a sideways force pushing outward that most walls were never designed to resist. A wall built to hold back soil alone can look sound for years, then fail suddenly after a wet winter, because it was built only to hold back earth, never water.
After drainage, common causes include an inadequate foundation, a wall not strong or thick enough for the height and load behind it, backfill that traps water rather than letting it drain, and no thought for what sits above and behind the wall: a driveway, a parked car, or a neighbour's raised border, all adding weight a wall retaining "just soil" was never asked to carry.
Drainage Isn't Optional
Every wall holding back more than a token amount of earth needs a proper drainage strategy, not an afterthought once it's built. That means weep holes through the face, free-draining backfill (clean stone, not the clay dug from the hole) behind the wall, a land drain along the base taken somewhere sensible, and a geotextile membrane so fine soil doesn't clog the system over time. Get this right and a wall lasts indefinitely; get it wrong and you're only renting time. Height, Regulations and Knowing When You Need an Engineer
This is where I'll be straight with you, because it's where I stop being the right person for the job. Above a certain height, or where a wall retains a driveway, a neighbour's ground, or anything with real load behind it, a retaining wall stops being a design decision and becomes a structural one. There's a threshold at which Building Regulations approval and a structural engineer's calculations become necessary, and exactly where it sits depends on the height, what's being retained, and what's above and behind. There's no single number I can give you, and I'd be doing you a disservice pretending otherwise.
What I can tell you is this: none of it is a substitute for a proper survey, so if you're in any doubt, get a structural engineer involved before you build, not after something moves. I design gardens; I don't design structures holding back tonnes of wet clay under a driveway, and any designer who tells you they can do both without an engineer is telling you something to be wary of. Boundaries and Neighbours
If a retaining wall holds back a neighbour's soil, or sits near a boundary line, you're in legal territory as well as structural territory. Whose wall it is, who's responsible for maintaining it, and whether you need their agreement before you start are questions worth answering properly, not after a dispute starts. I'll cover this, including party wall matters, in a future article; for now, treat any boundary-adjacent wall as a conversation to have early, ideally in writing.
Design Is Where the Real Work Begins
Here's where I differ from most of what you'll read on this: a retaining wall is one of the biggest visual elements in a garden, and left alone, most are ugly. A single tall, flat face of blockwork does the structural job and nothing else, and dominates a garden rather than belonging in it.
The fix usually isn't a different material, it's a different approach. Planting softens a wall more than anything: trailing plants over the top, climbers against the face, planting at the base to draw the eye from the hard edge. Stepping a level change across two or three lower walls, rather than one tall one, reads far more natural. A wall can do more than retain: a wider cap becomes a seat, a break in it becomes steps through the garden. A material that relates to the house, brick against brick, stone against stone, ties the structure back into the design.
Treat the level change as the opportunity it is. Some of the best gardens I've designed exist because of a slope a client originally wanted flattened away.
